Security updates are still available for El-Capitan in addition to upgrades. If you do not have Internet access, a bootable thumb drive installer may be useful. If your Mac does not support Internet Recovery, you will be unable to restore from Time Machine.

Download and install the macOS High Sierra Installer from the Mac App Store as soon as you have Internet access at your location. If you have an external USB drive, it should be the same size as or slightly larger than your Mac’s drive. Even if you intend to upgrade your computer’s operating system, you should keep the files on a regular basis. Updates to the most recent operating systems are available. How can I do that?
